What to Expect

The nurse will take you to the bone densitometry testing room where he/she will explain the procedure to you. You will be asked to lie down on an x-ray table. A small scanning camera will slowly pass over your hips and spine producing an image of your body.

During your bone densitometry procedure all you have to do is relax, breathe normally and remain still until the scan is complete. It is a completely painless procedure.

Allowing Time - Please allow plenty of time for your appointment. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to complete.

What to Wear - You should plan to wear loose, comfortable clothing without zippers or metal, such as sweat pants or a jogging suit.

What the Nurse Will Need to Know

  • Possibility of pregnancy
  • If you have had any recent x-rays or nuclear medicine tests (within 3-5 days)
  • If you have any metal pins, rods, or joint replacements

Finding Out Your Results - Your physician will interpret your examination and results will be mailed to you within two (2) weeks.

Questions - If you have any questions regarding your procedure, please ask a nurse or your physician. Staff is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 8:00am to12:00pm and 1:00pm to 4:50pm, and Wednesday 9:00am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 4:50 pm to answer any questions you may have prior to your appointment.
